The massive and dramatic High Level Bridge was built in 1846-1850 to a design by
Robert Stephenson. It was created to provide a vital link to the main East Coast Railway
from London to, ultimately, Scotland, as well as carrying road traffic. With both cast-iron
and wrought- iron locally fabricated decking the bridge has a clearance of 36.3metres
above the low water line.

Built in the early sixteenth century, the timber framed Cooperage was built as a
merchant’s house, some 200 years later being converted into a warehouse. Since 1974
this protected historic building has been utilized as a bar.
